The house sits at the top of a steep slope with a view across the Bay, and the old deck hanging over it was worn out: gray boards and a white picket railing.
We kept the part of the old framing that was still sound and sistered new joists to it (joist sistering instead of a full teardown), then set new deck footings and posts on the slope and built the rest of the raised structure new, out over the drop, so the raised deck sits level above the hillside. On top went about 500 sq ft of TimberTech AZEK Vintage Collection in Mahogany, a warm wood tone in a capped PVC board that won't rot or splinter.
Along the edge we ran 60 feet of aluminum cable railing, so from the deck you look through it at the view, not at pickets.
Old deck over a drop? Part of the framing may be worth keeping. This one kept its sound joists and got new ones sistered alongside.
