“MS Construction & Services did an excellent job replacing our rotten deck with a new one, as well as completing some other wood related small projects around the yard. …”

We build decks in Los Altos the same way we build them everywhere we work, from the Peninsula to the South Bay and Santa Cruz: framing first, boards last. What changes from town to town is the site — lot slope, access, and what the city wants to see before work starts.

Every project starts with a site visit and a written scope: decking system, framing, stairs, railings, delivery, disposal, assumptions and exclusions. You compare the complete project, not an opening number that grows later.

What homeowners here said

“My new pergola is beautiful. The men from MS Construction worked very hard on installing our pergola. They showed up during the time window that we set. They were professional and cleaned up once they were done. It did not seem like an easy job I'm so glad that we chose them and I highly recommend them.”

“Great service! Would highly recommend. Was extremely patient when my materials were backordered and delayed. Kept in communication with me. Quality work at an affordable price.”

Kim V. · Los Altos · Thumbtack, Jul 2023

“Mike responded to my request in a timely manner. He was respectful and his staff was professional and curtious. I would refer MS Construction to my family and friends.”

Questions Los Altos homeowners ask us

Los Altos requests are mostly redwood: new boards over a frame that gets reinforced, sanding and staining, a round deck, a raised deck with a pergola, cable railings. Many of them sit next to a pool.

Do you come out to look at the deck before quoting?

Yes. The visit is free: we measure, look at the frame and the site, and send a written proposal — decking system, framing, stairs, railings, delivery, disposal, assumptions and exclusions. If you want a number before anyone comes out, the calculator gives a range from our published rates. For a railing on its own, send the rough length first: it starts at 30 linear feet (redwood picket at 50).

Can the deck work around our pool?

Both of our Los Altos projects sit next to one. On the redwood deck the edge curves along the pool. On the TimberTech deck a second, 100 sq ft deck follows the curve of the patio, and the pool equipment moved from an old wooden box into an enclosure clad in the same boards: slatted walls let the equipment breathe, the lid lifts on gas struts and a side panel swings open for service.

Half of our redwood deck still looks good. Do we have to replace all of it?

Not necessarily. On our redwood deck in Los Altos one half was past saving and the other only looked that way. We replaced 811 sq ft with hand-selected redwood on the original frame, reinforced where it needed it, washed and sanded the other 460 sq ft, and stained the whole deck one tone with Armstrong Clark semi-solid. The seam between old and new boards is hard to find. The calculator prices new boards on an existing frame.

Can you replace our old railings with cable?

Yes. Cable railing is one of the railing systems we install; we confirm the layout and post spacing at the estimate visit. We install aluminum cable and aluminum picket railings and cable on wood posts, and replace old metal railings with aluminum (see deck railings). A railing on its own, without a deck, starts at 30 linear feet (redwood picket at 50); railings that come with a new deck we build have no minimum. The calculator prices them by the foot.

Our redwood has gone gray. Can it be refinished instead of replaced?

If the boards and the frame are sound, yes: washing, sanding and staining is a refinish, and it starts at 300 sq ft with the stairs included. If some boards are past saving, they are replaced first and stained with the rest.

Is there a minimum project size?

For a new deck or a full replacement on a low deck: 150 sq ft in redwood, composite or hardwood, 200 sq ft in pressure-treated wood. When the deck is 5 ft or more above the ground or hard to reach, 200 and 250 sq ft. On a hillside or multi-level deck, 300 sq ft. Refinishing starts at 300 sq ft with the stairs included, and stairs on their own start at five steps.

Do you fix tiled balconies?

No. A tiled balcony over plywood and a leak under the tile are waterproofing work, and we do not take them on. We build and rebuild decks with boards — wood, composite or hardwood — and the stairs, railings and pergolas that go with them.
