Pergola company and builder in San Jose, Peninsula & South Bay
MS Construction and Services builds each custom pergola on site in Construction Heart redwood, over a deck or as a separate structure in Peninsula and South Bay. Michael, the owner, measures every project, and the same crew builds it start to finish. Calculate your pergola or request a site visit. We reply within 10 minutes.
Our pergola cost per square foot depends on the area beneath the pergola and the roof you choose. Use the pergola footprint, not the area of the whole deck. The table applies to our custom redwood pergolas; it is not a price list for a kit you purchase separately.

Rates are dollars per square foot of area beneath the pergola. Railings, stairs and electrical work are outside these rates.
For an open pergola measuring 12 × 14 ft, the area is 168 sq ft. That puts it in the 101–200 sq ft band: 168 × $85 = $14,280. This is a calculator example for that size and roof, not the price of a deck-and-pergola project.

Fixed price for the written scope; changes only with your written approval.
Open means no roof. Choose it when you want an open pergola rather than a covered space. If you are picturing a table under a roof, select a roof option in the calculator instead of pricing an open pergola and assuming a roof comes with it.
A polycarbonate roof has the same rate as open. You do not move into the solid-roof column just because your pergola has polycarbonate overhead. Compare these options for the space you intend to use, rather than treating the price as the deciding difference between them.
Solid roof means plywood and shingles. Use the solid-roof column for this version. Keep that choice consistent when you enter the area in the calculator and when you request the written scope.

Redwood pergola
Construction Heart is the redwood grade specified for our custom pergola structure. The grade name matters when you compare the material in a proposal. Our redwood deck boards use Construction Common, a different grade with a striped red-and-white look; a proposal names both.
A redwood pergola and a redwood deck are also separate choices. The projects below include redwood pergolas with both composite and Cumaru decking. You can look at the pergola material without assuming you need a redwood deck beneath it.
Construction Heart is red through its full thickness, so the whole pergola reads as one even color. Every board, Heart or Common, is picked by hand for few knots and no damage. If you want oil or stain on the pergola, it is listed as its own line in the written scope.
A pergola on your deck
A pergola on a deck can be considered with a new deck project or as an addition to an existing deck. An existing deck needs a project-specific assessment before the proposal can say what is possible. This page does not establish that your deck is suitable.
When you request a visit, say whether the deck is already there or is part of the work you are planning. Include the intended pergola area and roof choice so the conversation concerns the same project you priced in the calculator.

Pergolas we built
These are deck-and-pergola projects. Each price below is for the whole project, not an itemized pergola price. The working days describe the combined work where the plan provides that information. They are not a promised schedule for your pergola installation.

Morgan Hill: composite deck and louvered aluminum pergola

Whether your proposed pergola needs a permit requires a check of the applicable local rules for that project. This page does not give a city-specific exemption or a blanket answer for every roof option. Read our California deck permit guide for related background; it is not a determination for your pergola.
Our custom redwood pergola price depends on its footprint and roof option, using the rates in the table above. The open 12 × 14 ft example is 168 sq ft: 168 × $85 = $14,280. Railings, stairs and electrical work are outside the rate. Calculate your pergola, then request the written scope for your project.

Can a pergola go on an existing deck?

Do I need a permit for a pergola?
It depends on your city and on the size and placement of the pergola. We check your city's rules at the free visit. If a permit is needed, we can manage it for you on request: permit management is $2,500, and city fees and other third-party costs are separate.
