I work as a general contractor, and one of the biggest parts of the job is knowing which crews you can trust with a piece of a larger project. What I appreciated most was that our conversations felt like two contractors working through a project together. There was no sales pitch. It depends on the size, the site and whether the city requires a permit. Your written estimate states the schedule before you sign anything.
Before you sign, we tell you whether the project needs one. Running the permit is a separate service: $2,500 for the paperwork, coordination and inspections. City fees are not in our price; you pay them to the city directly.
Composite costs more to build ($50–75 per sq ft against $46–58 for redwood on level ground) and needs only washing. Redwood is real California wood; it needs regular refinishing to keep its color.
We build residential decks from 150 sq ft. We don’t take small handyman jobs.

Yes, a project starts with a deposit, but it’s tied to a defined stage and written into your proposal, never an open-ended advance. Every payment follows that schedule, and the proposal is itemized, so you always see what you’re paying for.
Mikhail “Mike” Sankin founded MS Construction and Services after relocating from Russia, where he previously operated a construction business. He holds an engineering degree, and that background shaped a technical, detail-oriented approach to scope, materials, sequencing and project coordination. The company was established in California in May 2023; the current California deck contractor license is registered under MS Decking and Services.
The field team is built in the same mold: experienced craftsmen who can read a structure, think through a non-standard site and lead the work without hand-holding. Plenty of crews can follow a plan. Ours can lead one. Mike coordinates project review, pricing, procurement, deliveries, logistics and key decisions, and the project is never sold or handed off to an unrelated deck company. The goal is not maximum project volume. It is reliable service, careful execution and a finished result that holds up in the details.
